Hi Folks,

Been a while since last on this forum, and good too see some familiar names and lots of new ones too. Incidentally, have been to couple of common or garden manufacturer forums in past months, and this one has the most intelligent level of contribution by a long way.

Question:
My trusty 1998 9000 2L LPT Anniversary has just manifest a permanantly on SRS (Airbag) warning light fault. Would much appreciate all feedback defining the most common causes of this fault.

NB: Did a quick search but could't find an earlier thread asking similar question.

Thanks in advance, and happy Saabing.

If you haven't fiddled with anything behind the airbag panel recently (flasher relays etc.) that might have dislodged something, then a diagnostic will be needed.

spoke to SAAB about this reasently, even if you have a problem you can fix you still need to get a SAAB dealer to re code the system to activate it, about ÂŁ30

I'm sure West Midlands Saab could do the reset for you at a much cheaper price - provided there's nothing wrong with the airbag of course..

Thanks for the info.
Haven't worked on the car for a while, or dash area ever, so was wondering if there was a common sensor fault, such as the wing crash sensors.

I will check the fuse when I get a moment, perhaps this evening, and follow up with West Midland Saab for the eventual reset and possibly diagnosis.

Does anyone know if there is a diagnostic fault code stored in the ECU whenever the SRS light stays on?

At least it's not blinking or I'd have to stick a lable over it - otherwise it would drive me barmy

Will let you know what transpires...

Yes. The dealer should be able to read this code before resetting the unit. My dealer reset the SRS light for me free of charge after I strained a connector while fitting an alarm. If you're asking them to diagnose the problem for you but not giving them the repair job, I'm sure they'll charge for the diagnosis. Again, mine charged about ÂŁ25 to diagnose a faulty ABS sensor for me.

Unless you already know exactly what the problem is, it's not really worth diagnosing it yourself when a dealer can give you useful information and you need them to reset the fault anyway. Unlike Trionic, which stores fault codes in volatile memory that can be erased by disconnecting the power, the SRS ECU stores them permanently as it is a safety-related system.

Yep as Bill pointed out, once a fault is detected by the SRS system the light comes on and can only be reset by Tech 2. The seat belt pretensioners are part of the SRS system as well. It only needs one connector to be disconnected for the system to detect a fault when the ignition is turned on (been there done that!).

You will have to get Tech 2 to read the fault code and take it from there. Best to stay friendly with a local dealer/specialist then they read it for free (its a 10 sec job).
