Help! I've had my '96 Saab 900 from new, and it has been a fantastic car - except for the sound system. It's a standard fit Clarion with 6-CD autochanger. The autochanger was replaced once under warranty, but around a year later stopped working. I've lived with that, but now the radio/cassette player has stopped altogether.

The car was sitting in my drive unused for a few months, and the battery died. I replaced the battery and the usual 'code' message came up. I entered the code, and it just stared back at me, refusing to do anything. The code matches my card exactly, so no incorrect keystrokes. I left the radio the standard hour-and-a-bit, and cleared the display to try again. Same thing, so I set off on a 3-hour - very quiet - journey. Now the radio is completely dead. Although the aerial comes up when I start the car, the display is blank and it refuses to react to any keys - including the power button.

Anybody help?

Disconnect the battery for at least an hour and start again. This time depress the band button after entering the code, until the radio springs into life, assuming, and I am sure it is, that you have the correct code

Thanks for the quick response, just done that but no joy. I reconnected after an hour and 10 mins, and when I pressed the 'power' button, the expected 'code' message came up. I entered the code (the one on the card that came with my car direct from the factory in Sweden - so it should be the right one!) and held down 'band' for 3 minutes! It just sits there with the code displayed and doesn't respond. It won't let me reset the code and also doesn't let me switch off the power or anything. Even turning off the car engine and removing the key, the code remains displayed.

Any other thoughts? Is there a fuse I could have blown by reconnecting the battery that would disrupt the process?

Further to my last posting, the radio now doesn't display anything and doesn't respond to the power button. When I turn on the ignition, the aerial comes up, when I turn it off, the aerial goes down, but that's the limit of interaction. I'm at the end of my tether with this one - does anyone have any ideas before I give up and look for a Saab garage that won't expect me to sell my children to pay for their time?

Any display on the SID?

First try removing fuse #11 and 13 and wait a while before replacing. Make sure radio is off, then start your engine. Press the radio 'on' button, and you should get your 'Code in' prompt.

If still no joy (meaning no power at all to the radio), there is a 10A fuse in the back of the head unit that could have blown...

Hope that helps.
