NG900 Clutch confusion

The clutch biting point on my 1997 900 S Turbo is so far into the floor that it makes for tirseome driving in traffic and frequent gear crunching/missing. To protect my gearbox and (driving reputation ) I am keen to fix it. I have been told that you cannot adjust the cable or replace any self adjusting mechanism, I just need a new clutch. Trouble is, at 98k miles there is absolutely no sign of clutch slip. Is this big bill the only answer? Any suggestions welcome.

Re: NG900 Clutch confusion

The cable clutch came with the earlier models, not sure if the 1997 model had gone to hydraulic yet.

If it's a cable clutch, look to where the cable goes into the firewall in the engine compartment. You'll also see a long spring on it. Give this spring a couple of tugs, away from the firewall. It will cause the self-adjusting ratchet to readjust.
As a side note, I've been through two clutch cables in just over a year, one failed 5 months after installation, the next lasted ten. The dealer fixed it both times for free, but I still had to have the car towed.

If you've got the hydraulic clutch, it sounds like your master cylinder is going.

Re: NG900 Clutch confusion

Sounds like it would be worth replacing the clutch cable first. 97 model cars started with a cable. The self adjusting mechanism is not up to the job of lasting with a clutch that is getting heavy. German, Swedish and French www.gsfcarparts.com do a cable which seems a bit better than the Saab part. At least on my car two replacement Saab cables failed within the space of six months. Part from GSF working fine.

Only caveat is that the Saab cable came with the fixings for the revised routing. After rerouting my cable I can't say I've noticed any difference. The GSF cable has the rubber mounts on the cable in the correct position for the new routing.

Interesting Ian - I replaced mine a few months ago with genuine Saab and it is now as 'gritty' and stiff as before - it worked well for about a week - did your 'replacement' from GSF make that much difference - no problems withe the extra bits as I have those already from Saab replacement.

Re: NG900 Clutch confusion

Mike,

No real difference in the feel. Clutch is very heavy still, but the GSF cable self adjuster seems to be better able to take the load. My Saab cables started making loud popping noises as the self adjuster slipped and after a couple of months of doing this they failed.

Clutch still bites well and apart from stop start traffic it's not too much of a problem.
