Hi,

Does anyone know if there is anything I can do for protection of my front fog lights, I seem to be particularly unlucky breaking then with chippings, just replaced one and the other has got smashed, any ideas before I replace it?

Cheers,
Rob.

3M makes paint and lens protection films that work very well. In the US, there are several companies that make pre-cut kits for lots of cars, including Saabs, so I'd imagine that the UK would have similar companies. I have a kit from StonGard that includes thick film for the headlights, turn signals, and fog lights, and thinner film for the hood and fenders. The fit of the pieces is practically perfect and you don't notice it once it's on.

The films stop the glass from shattering once it has been smashed, rather than actually preventing breakage.
After replacing both my front fogs, I bought a sheet of 6mm polycarbonate on Ebay (cost about ÂŁ8 for A3 size). If you look at your foglamps you'll notice a slight recess around them on the bumper, presumably where the blanks go if you don't have foglamps. I made a template to fit the recess then used a jigsaw with a perspex cutting blade to cut the polycarbonate to shape.
I then drilled small holes in the positions of the slots in the recess (where the blanks' clips would fit) and used self tapping screws to hold the new protectors in place.
I did this about 2 years ago and they still look good and provide 100% protection from breakage.

If you would like, I can take one off and scan it to give you a template and show where the holes go.

Stongard will buy you a new light if it breaks or cracks with a piece of their light-protecting film on it. Their product for lights is pretty thick and rubbery and should absorb most any rock impact.

Looked closer last night, the Aero doesn't have a recess, assuming that's because they all have fog lights.
Bought some cheap film off ebay but can't find anywhere that sells stongard as a DIY int he UK.
