hello

I recently bought a 1999 Saab 9-3 with 300 000km on it.
The car drove fine for the first 100 kilometers or so, then when i went to germany to test it out at full speed, this is what happened:
after driving 212 km indicated on gps, that is, the max speed reached... sustained for about one minute, then driven at about 145km/h... after 20 minutes the RPM started jumping on its own up and down, you could feel slight jumps when driving, simmilar to as when gears are not changed smoothly.
then after moving to slower speeds once out of highway, the RPM went way high. On idle it jumps to max by itself. happens all the time since then. It is only controllable with careful combination of brake and clutch pushing.
if you put higher gears at slow speeds, it is controllable better. driving is very tricky, check engine is flashing all the time (at first it didnt lit up straight away, now each time the key is put in, but ignition not started yet,
the checking reports OK on SID but check engine yellow indicator on dashboard flashes (it is almost in the SOS morse code rythm :D ), and well - the car is barely drivable.
manual says it is either something to do with fuel injection system or something else, cant remember.
after reading forums i assume it is the fuel pump, but most people lose power. i have the opposite, like the car wanted to launch into space..
I checked the gas pedal lever and it is working fine.

Could it be some simple thing like a sensor or something? I first thought it had something to do with cruise control, but it matters little, if at all, when turned on.
So can i be sure whether it is the fuel pump so that i can purchase it?
I plan to ask the salesman to spare me the maintenance costs as it is something that happened immediately after purchase, still would buy the pump myself...
or maybe it is something stupid and simple? how can i be sure? what do you guys think?

the RANDOM workshop had no clue what they were doing.
turned out that the previous owner tried to install LPG into it but eventually decided not to. (?)
the maintenance was poorly done and so there were some "pipes" from the fuel injectors missing, like fell out somewhere..
anyway, at Saab dealer, i got them all replaced and the car is the smoothest ride ever now.
dealer said i should have 3 years of peace. just standard maintenance :)
thanks for the input. i love the car:cool:

Don't think the workshop people are too clever, spraying it with water! (Which sensor, BTW?)
Here's an external link to reading the Check Engine codes, I suspect you've overworked the MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure) sensor. As the sensor itself works on a pizeo-electric principle, an aging or failed sensor can send false signals to the ECU. I have had strange idle issues before when starting without the hose connected.

Try disconnecting the battery for an hour or so (don't forget your radio codes beforehand, though) and see if this helps.

Concerning that burning smell, given your method of controlling your speed using your clutch and high gearing, I think you may need a replacement fairly soon.

Engine has a plug cleaning function that sends a couple of HT bursts through all the spark plugs immediately after you shut your engine down. Normal.

also wanted to add:

when you turn the engine off after the ride was rough because of this problem (like driving on slow speeds, trying to control RPM all the time and with two instances when i put neutral gear for a second, you could smell something burning.
i think it may be related to the clutch working all the time and rubbing something.
and when i turned the engine off after this ride, i could hear something like: tff tffff tfff, a bit like a steam engine, the sounds repeating very fast and it stopped after a few seconds.

Also, i hear this sound, like from speakers turned on, but not playing sound. this happens even if the radio is turned off and there is no key put in.
so after removing the key you can hear the sound. - like something was still turned on but it is not coming from the speakers, more like somewhere on the dashboard, on the right.
this also may be apparent when you enter the car before trying to turn it on, but i didnt remember to focus on that when i entered the car last time..

can anyone confirm the high rpm, going to full rpm on neutral, is related to the fuel pump please?
