Hi All my first post so please be gentle

My wife's lovely 2006 SAAB 9-3 1.9 TiD Convertible Loss of Power steering :( (happened while on holiday) Wife rang RAC they arrived after 4 hours and took 30 seconds and said the power steering pump gone! without carrying out any diagnostic checks, checked no fuses or connectors, they didn't even plug the diagnostic kit into the car.

I replaced the power steering pump drove 6 miles and the power steering went again!! :(

Rang the RAC they came out again, this time they connected RAC diagnostic tool and came out with various DTC's but nothing relating to the power steering according to them.

I have seen something on here about a connector block/wire that can cause this but can not find the resolve, how to fix it, which connector, which wire, where is it?

I have noticed the last couple of times driving the car if it stands for a few hours (over night) when started up the power steering does not work and on a couple of occasions the message is displayed "Traction Control Failure" Contact Service' if I then drive down the road at 20/30mph (leave the car in gear etc) and just turn the ignition off / on the power steering is OK and will be OK for the rest of that day :)

My wife loves this car but no longer trusts it :(

All help greatly received thanks in advance

I would be inclined to get the alternator output checked .
I had the same problem with my old 1.9 120 .
First thing in the morning no power sterring , turn off then on and hay presto all back to normal .
Also the traction control message appearing
When my alternator went completely it was showing every fault known to man on the SID

the denso alts are the weak point on the diesels, the diesel has EHP steering, any drop in voltage the steering will cease to function..

Try this below , but try to do it first thing in the morning ( if that's when the logos of power sterring occurs )

Hi

Followed all the test in this link, battery and alternator

During start up battery voltage dropped to 10.3v

With headlight on and full beam alternator output 13.8v this remained even at 1500>2000rpm

Replaced battery and alternator, repeated the tests, at start up battery voltage 11v alternator charging at 14.1v

BUT I still have the problem, no power steering and after a few minutes 'Traction control Failure'

As before if I drive the car and turn ignition off/on power steering works OK and no warning message displayed

BUT straight from start no power steering, my wife is missing her beautiful car :(

Yeah, looking at that vast array of possible faults my mind bends immediately to a power supply issue ......

The reason I say this is my car developed a alt fault (Not charging ...sid went bing bong ya screwed)
The AA/RAC whatever man just put me a new batt on & followed me home ..... Some 30 miles or so ..... Had to change the batt once again on the run, however once home & a chance to think a bit & after I had recharged the batt & replaced the alt I had a huge list of DTC's off my lil cheap scanner..... Once cleared, the Mil went off & all was well ..... So plug in tools are all very well, but however are just a general guide

After all the Tids do have elecric ps pumps !

Hi J..M - lizzard-t

Thanks all, I will borrow a multi meter and carry out the checks and report back in a couple of days (when I will have body to help me do the checks)

The more I think about it the more I feel its the battery or alternator. I work for Jaguar Land Rover and our cars are designed if low voltage major modules will slowly shut down / go off line / reduced functionality IE power steering will stop working AKA SAAB :)

Hi all,
Time for an update, upon first start each morning Traction control failure - Water in fuel - No power steering

Leave the car to run for a moment or 2 engine off and back on hay presto all OK - the car will then drive great :)

Taking a DTC read I have the below codes present in the EHPS;

C1532 - Steering Angle Sensor Signal Circuit Open or High Voltage
(05) - Not present

C1532 - SRS Steering Angle Sensor Signal Circuit Range/Performance
(08) - Not present

And loads of DTC's present in the ECM

P0070 - Ambient Air Temperature Sensor Malfunction
(71) - Not present

U2108 - CAN-Bus no Communication with ABS/TC
(70) - Not present

P1811 - Torque Signal Malfunction (CAN)
(71) - Not present

P0500 - Vehicle Speed Signal Range/Performance
(7E) - Not present

You have two seperate issues.

1.Remove and clean the EGR valve. If you still get the fault replace the EGR valve.
http://www.saabscene.com/forum/threads/153786-TTID-EGR-valve-EGR-pipe-MAP-sensor-and-THROTTLE-BODY-Cleaning

2.If your tracking has been affected or you have had any suspension parts changes then the steering angle sensor will throw the error. When did you last have it checked? If its ok then you need to recalibrate the steering angle sensor with a Tech2.If it fails to recalibrate you will need a replacement.
It is inside CIM unit which sits directly under the steering wheel...fairly common fault.

If it was my own vehicle I would source a 2nd hand CIM and transplant the sensor...average DIY.
There are tutorials on youtube.

Buy yourself a simple elm327 OBD2 bluetooth dongle so you can see and clear the basic error codes.

Hi cjapeterborough
I have recently well within the last few thousand miles had a complete 4 wheel alignment carried out, slight adjustment on the front tracking and 1 rear toe, drove great since then.

Re-calibrate the CIM/Steering angle sensor do you know anyone near Nuneaton/Coventry with Tech 2?

Would a second hand sensor be OK? and would it require calibration?

Would a new CIM require calibration?

I have been using OPCOM to carrying out DTC reads It also does live data, not sure about CIM calibration though.

Thanks

If you have had the tracking done that can easily throw the angle sensor code.
Been there done that myself but I have my own Tech2 so can easily calibrate.
Second hand sensor would be ok but you still need to calibrate it when fitted...but yours may only need calibrating.
Dont think you can do angle sensor calibration with opcom but I not experienced enough with it to be sure.

Adding a CIM is a Tech2 job plus if you go 2nd hand it needs to come with its paired keys and it needs to be the same configuration as your ie TCS/ESP or not etc.

See below..looks like you need security access pin code (Tech2 has it)

AS my previous reply you need to see if the steering angle sensor calibrates first as you say tracking has been adjusted and yes that throws the generic TCS error. That might be all you need to do.

If it doesnt calibrate then you need at least a replacement sensor...the cheapest route is to find a donor CIM with one in it and transplant ie one with no keys as the CIM is useless without its keys so only useful for component parts.

The water in fuel will be the sensor on the fuel filter...do you have one fitted ie sensor has the wiring been damaged? So seperate issue.

I wouldnt go down the road of replacing the whole CIM unit until you know more.

If you want to drive across to me from Coventry I will check it on my TEch2 for free if you want.

If you end up having to replace the CIM I would remove yours first and check the part number then look for a replacement with keys or brand new that is a match for yours.

As for the power steering that is again a seperate issue and could be down to wiring and comms issues between the modules again a TEch2 will show the number of bus errors between the modules and could be down to a bad module or wiring between them.

There are a few CIM experts advertising on Ebay ...not cheap but would avoid Tech2 marrying and the possible purchase of new virgin keys etc. You could get lucky and find an identical replacement with its keys but again you need to remove yours and get the part number as there are loads of them and you only want to buy once.

See below the steering angle sensor is the middle module...there are tutorials around on saabcentral but most have lost pics due to the photobucket debacle.
Most repair outlets would simply say buy a complete new CIM module and not just replace the failed component..... at a very high cost though.

Hi All sorry for the delay in updating the post.
Turns out the original power steering pump had decided to pack up after 11 years

It also turns out the 2 new replacements where NOT new but recon units  and they where both FAULTY

Obtained second hand power steering pump/module from Ashby Garage - Ashby Parva all OK
