hi all, any ideas what could be causing a high pitched whining noise coming from the pulley area? it increases with engine speed, and its not a slipping belt.

For the brave/careful

take a long handled screwdriver and place on the static bolt on the pulleys or the alternator shell and listen/feel at the other end for vibration/noise.

DO NOT get the scrwewdriver tangled with the pulleys or serpentine belt!!!

odd thing is that the noise has gone today!

Alternative way I locate engine noises is using some hose. Take two or three feet of 3/8 or 1/2" diameter hose and carefully place one end near your ear and the other near various potential noise sources. This is a quick way to determine impending bearing failures, and is less likely to give you a shock or really break things if you slip...

Best of all is if the noise stays away.

i had a look at the belt, and its covered in cracks, so i think 1st job will be replacing that!

Chris, while you have the belt off, spin the idler pulleys, in fact for me (as I have recently done), just replace them, the alternates are about £30 the pair.
