Boost seems to have gradually dropped away over the last couple of days. I have pulled fuses, done an adaption run and had a quick poke around for loose hoses - can't find an easy fix - where do I start?

check your wastegate /wastegate rod
I have had the pin fall out and lost all my boost
thats the easy one ,,all of the rest are more difficult and we would need some more description of the problem...

Agree with Ylee. This has happened to me too . The wastgate actuator rod is attached to the turbo body by an 'R' clip. The clip breaks and falls off leaving the wastegate permanently open hence no boost. Check if the actuator rod has side to side movement. If that is the problem it should be an easy 15 minute fix job .

Wastegate rod still seems to be connected - can get a hand to it. - Should I be able to move it against the spring pressure? - I can - not much I grant you - but it moves.

Has the loss of boost been acompanied with loss of perf?

If not then check for pipe leaks/splits up to the boost guage.

If a loss of performance then check for leaking dump valve, split pressure pipes and faulty apc components.

Also check that all the one way valves aren't leaking through.

Does the boost guage still showe full vacuum on the over run?

I dont have a gauge
....... must get one.

All pipework appears sound - most is fairly new, unperished, no splits etc. One way valve is still only one way. Sucking on dump valve pipe it appears to hold a vacuum.

Well from waht you say, there are only about 4 area's

1. Can the air get into the turbo?
2. Is the air leaking out after the turbo under boost (the pipes can be deceitful and look fine until under booost)
3. Is the turbo working properly (if not it's usually acompanied with lots of exhaut smoke)
4. Is the apc faulty or restricting boost for some other reason (knocking, lean mixture etc)
5. do you have a big exhaust leak before the turbo
6. help...

Bu**er,

Yesterday afternoon I was given a very close call when a fairly new Golf TDI (!!!!!) decided to go for it when I pulled out to overtake him.

Either he had something a bit special or my
needs to respond to one of the many spams that I receive promising more satisfaction
.

I am thinking that I might invest in getting the car set up by someone who knows what they are doing. - Any suggestions - I live near Burton -on-Trent and work in Birmingham.

Thanks in advance

do not underestimate the tdi grunt ....
they do have a lot of torq so they accelerate pretty quickly but they do run out of puff (eventually !!)
there may be little or nothing wrong
maybe a few adaptation runs are in order ?
see billj 9000 site for details (bottom of the page )

Hi,

up to 200 km/h on the Autobahn most VW or Audi TDIs, even the 90hp, are very, very quick. Here in Germany, they are often driven by businessmen who are used to driving fast. It is always a competition for me to outrun them, even in my 225hp Viggen.

Yours,

Philip

I would go along with Philip on this one. Had a bit of a tossle with a VW Passat 1.8 diesel around the Sheppard's Bush round about. My, I had to engage the turbo into the top end of yellow on my gauge in order to shake him off....

As a pasing note: I then go taken on by a Porsche a 928S on the A406. I think he'll now have a healthy amount of respect for SAABs within street legal speeds .

Thanks StanleyB and Philip hs

My - haven't diesels come on of late

The only one that I have driven for any distance (an RAF N/a escort in 1988) I managed to write off
....... I think I may have chugged out onto a roundabout in third instead of first

Any way - back to the lack of
........
I have been trying to analyse the problem whilst driving.
I suspect that I am getting different levels of performance / lag / boost at different times.

could the bypass valve be at fault? ....something sticking? (I guess a perforated diaphragm would give poor performance at all times?)I think its been on there for the full 115K miles.

I shall endeavour to get a boost guage at the weekend to check out what is happening with some empirical basis.........rather than a seat of the pants or finger in the air guestimate.

will let you know

Cheers

Woman at work has a recent VW Golf TDI. It's actually badged GTI & the engine is rated at 150BHP! Knowing diesels (I've owned a couple) that will come with a pretty impressive torque output.
