Me and the Mrs are going to stay in New York (well New Jersey) for 5 days towards the end of November.

What's the weather going to be like? I know it can get very cold out there, but not sure when the really cold period starts from.

Just need to know if I need to start shopping around for warm stuff

Usually, winter doesn't really get going until later than that. It does have the potential to get pretty cold though. I would expect temps in the 40's or 30's.

And be happy, McScooby, you didn't come and visit North Dakota this past holiday season. We had a few days that got down to -39F ambient with a windchill around -70F! And that was a somewhat mild winter!

I was in NY last November for a week.

I never needed to dress warmer than jeans, t-shirt and a fleece.

There were however a couple of rainy days so a waterproof would have been good, and make sure you have decent shoes for walking.
Then again most people's hosts don't decide it would be a good idea to walk all 5 East river bridges (inc. all 3 arms of the Triborough), so your requirements may be slightly easier.
