I've been looking to replace my old '93 2.0 LPT.
I've looked at a couple of 9000s, a '97 P reg. 2.3t CSE ,58k £3,200ono and a '97 2.0 LPT CSE "Anniversary", £3,700,92k.
Both cars had a browny/ orangy "varnish" on the upper half of the dipstick. What worries me is that my own car doesn't have this , even after 217k miles.

Any one know if this kind of deposit on the dipstick is normal ? Or is it indicative of anything worrrying ( eg , using cheapo oil)
Thanks
Wul

I think it all depends on how the previous owners checked their oil. Some wipe the whole dipstick everytime keeping it clean, I just check it when its cold after standing overnight thus it never gets wiped clean and has varnish stains on it to a small degree.
Personally wouldn't be worried. Documented service history should put your mind at ease though.
