Hey all I am pleased to be the happy owner of an 87 9000 turbo. I am also happy to be in the same Saab family as you all. Ready, Opinions please,
Which would be the best upgrade: Hiflow exhaust 3"
:APC mod :16" or 17" rims and performance tires or a Stereo system (you know cause the car's perfect already) Actually what are the best mods to do in order of best bang for buck. I need to expand my realm of possibilities. I have no desire to ever sell this car. When it is dead it will sit in my back yard and provide shelter for those late night chilly smokes. So don't hold back, What would you do. ps 150kmi. Also I would love to find more Saab forums, FAQS, performance tips, pics etc. I need Saab links! okay any reply's are appreciated. Pss. Get over to www.sounddomain.com and www.cardomain.com and put your Saabs on display for the world to see. I'll have mine up after my first mod whatever that will be.

Welcome to the boards Dansaab!

What to do on the car will come down to personal preference. My 10 disk CD changer hasn't worked since I bought the car almost a year ago - and I haven't even thought about sorting it!

Would have thought an ECU upgrade, or something like a bleed valve would give the most increase for the least (relative) outlay. The exhaust would be good, but not as cost effective as far as the other performance bits. The wheels would be good too, but probably more cosmetic than an out and out gain in handling.

Take your time and do the lot!

Yes wellcome indeed..

Sorry, but this question is strictly personal taste, so excuse my indulging.
Bought my standard 2000BHP 9000 CSE 1994, 106K last year.

Get trionic done ( I emailed Abbott Racing, told them I wanted it done, and had around 300 Quid to spend, and they did it for that!!) plus sports dump valve. Get a freer cone type filter if poss fitted.

I Got a bigger rear box (ooer missus) first, but looking back, suggest you should start from front and work back, for obvious reasons of freer air flow. Get an exhaust system made up by an independent engineering type firm if possible, who sometimes specialise in hand-made exhausts, they can make to your personal requiremnts, and cheaper that other sources.

All round poly wishbone and anti roll bushes, and lowered stiffer spings also on mine now ( they DO make a difference) but I have still got standard shocks, so cannot advise there).

I have got standard 15" teardrop aeros wheels(if that is what they are called), and would too love a set of 225/45/17"( or thereabouts ) money permitting one day.

A bleed valve is cheap and very potent, snip wastegate pipe, slot into place, and adjust untill you get optimum boost etc' (any number of people can go into this in detail, me included) but do it !! If you can change a plug...you can do this..

The above has(on paper!)pushed mine up to 260BHP. )

Lots more people 100 times more expert than me to give you advice though, as I say, strictly down to priorities and budget.

You did not say if tyou are a DIY'er, or a "put into Garage" man like me, so check prices out carefully for performance bits, they vary tremendously.

Cheers
Andy

I did the exhaust first (had to the old one fell off!!)this was £300 from powerflow..made up to my spec .Next was the air filter both these made it feel faster .
next was the 17 wheels with 235/40's..
After another 100k miles I had abbott rebuild the engine + gearbox ..had the trionic upgrade
lowered the final drive and had a lsd fitted
plus the poly bushes and a bailey dump valve
Finally the bleed valve...
(Actually I pulled out the saab stereo first and fitted a sony cd + minidisc changer adding an amplifier and subwoofer soon after)
the choice will be difficult..
if I was doing it again I would have done the poly bushes a lot earlier

good luck !

Great thanks for the input guys. Geez I am such a noobie, I have so much to learn. Wohoo fun!
The bleeder valve. Are there any walkthroughs or faq I can check. I may do it my self. I am not a professional level diy'er, but if I can, I will.
okay, okay, okay does the ECU get modded, or the APC. Remember I have the 87 9000, I'm still looking around for more info (on my model). I am very interested in this upgrade. Is this related to the trionic upgrade?
With what litte searching I did do I'm thinking about a staggering upgrade cycle. about $300-$350 every month for about 4- 5 months.
While not in this order here are proposed upgrades
Bleeder valve and new speakers front and rear, Proabably going to keep stock radio(for a while, until I go big). month 1
exhaust 3" all the way up, month 2
APC (or whatever) Upgrade. month 3
New high performance all season tires (some snow) month 4 p.s on stock 15" rims
Month 5. Proabaly going to get an 800 w amp and two 10" woofers in a box. well see tho. so what do ya think? P.SS, Plus tons of small repairs:
broken antenna mast. Hatchback latch( What the heck! bugger stuck on me! any tips?) Interior door lights. and loose door panel fabric!
Just so that you know this car was a hand me down
from my sister, she loved it until the turbo went out. And I scooped it up for a cool 0 dollars and a smile (she owed me a ton of money). I just got my taxes back and had been saving for a year
so I am estatic that I have an opportunity to absolutley hook this car up, and still have enough money to eventually get another car(Saab!)
The car while not being immaculate, is in great shape and I have a close mechanic friend that can help me get through the next couple years without the dreaded "cost of repair bug" I also plan on having the coolest 9000 in Cincinnati. So of course any help would be appreciated.

John,
Thankyou for pointing that one out, the unintentional mistakes are always the best. I am reknown for engaging mouth before opening brain( see, that wasn't funny at all)!

Trying to wangle a few hours off Sunday, to get down to the Meet( may make a Sunday/Monday of it, have Family down that way,and can drop off in Shoreham / Brighton to keep them happy.)

..sorry, back to upgrades.

DanSaab/.

Sorry, didnt read that you were in USA, but any SAAB dealer can no doubt give you info and pricing on which Module is appropriate for the upgrade tune, either by altering your unit, or an exchange unit, not sure.
I agree with Ylee to get poly wishbone and anti roll bushes first, they are cheap, and with lower stiffer suspension as well, car will feel better, and better handling is worth more than a few extra horse power.
I would go for bigger wheels with matching tyres as a treat, you will not be sorry, instead of all that expensive music gear, remember, a lot of us British SAAB owners wear flat cap and smoke pipes, and think a Bass box is something you take with you when you go fishing.

Yeah and poly bushes, I knew that:) Actually the music equipment isn't that bad, All www.ebay.com ! I make a few long distance trips, which make an excellent system, a necesity. Don't worry, I'll make sure to leave space to pop the tackle box in.(and golf clubs, tennis racquet)
also thanks everyone for the advice, I am now able to make a reasonable decision. I will of course be reading the rest of these posts. This site is so informative I don't feel like a noobie anymore. Thank you all!
