so, it's been a really long story with my turbo... but i really need to get get a replacement.

i have a 87 saab 900 turbo, and i am looking into putting one from 1989 on it. these two parts should be interchangeable, right? i should be able to put it in mine, even though it has the water cooling holes plugged... right?

i am looking on ebay, and ebay has already F-ed me twice on these. and so has thesaabsite. so i'm really hoping that this last ebay try will work. the turbo looks good... and a little cheaper than the saabperformanceparts replacement cartridge... i have the other parts, it's just that one of the exhaust metal pieces (don't know the name) is cracked a little, but i don't think it should affect the way it works... it's just a hairline crack.

so, back to my original question,

will the 89-90 2.0L TB0382 turbo fit on my '87?

thanks so much.

There were only three turbos used on c900s, afaik.

Garrett without watercooling.
Watercooled Garrett
Watercooled Mitsubishi.

All are interchangeable, with the Garrett apparently giving stronger boost higher up the rev range, and the Mitsu more boost in the mid-range and a smoother feed-in. The only real gotcha is going between watercooled and non-watercooled involves sorting the cooling. I wouldn't go from a watercooled turbo to a non-watercooled one - it's a daft step, especially since watercooled turbos aren't exactly thin on the ground.

Would it not also be the case that the oil only cooled turbos may have had a faster oil flow rate and so if you fit a water cooled one without water lines it may not have enough oil flow to prevent carbonising?
