I have no idea what the history of my timing chain is on my 1986 9000 turbo. It has 325,000km, no obvious timing problems. Are there any signs I should listen for? Should I replace it without waiting? Do they fail instantly without warning?

From what I have read on this board they almost always start to rattle before failure occurs. Rev the engine up and see if it rattles when you take your foot off the pedal.

325,000 km ( approx 200,000 miles ) is exceptional if its on its first chain but I suspect it may be on its second.

Basically if it ain't broke don't fix it !
