 right where do I start , I have a 9-3 vector sport on a 56 plate kitted out with the hirsch goodies and remap , I managed to blow turbo causing the 1st cat and turbo needing replaced , all done with a full flush and good service , but now temp gauge does not sit at half way the slower I drive the higher it goes but not past half way mark faster I go the lower it goes but does not hit low , heating working fine no loss of coolant , even after a 400 mile round trip does not sit at half way , is it the thermo ,sensor or water pump ! Heads battered with it :confused:

Which engine?

Sounds like the thermostat is opening. Thermosat are designed to and usually fail open, allowing water to flow. if it fails completely then the engine should not get fully warm.

OK, Was it doing this before the turbo popped? if no then maybe something has been dislodged - fan wiring/connector or possibly fuse???

If the temp is cool when driving at speed then there is airflow through the rad, cooling the fins and coolant. if at lower speeds the temp goes up then there is less airflow and at a certain point the fans should kick in - are they working???

The engine is a z19dth , yeah fans are working doesn't seem to affect the car , western saab say either waterpump or thermostat , the gauage is working to a point but does not sit in middle like I thought it should Do , I'm not sure if it was doing it before I popped turbo tho

It won't be the water pump, and it's unlikely to be the sensor, although as a matter of course it's worth disconnecting the electrical connector from the top of it and spraying it with connection cleaner.

The fault lies with the thermostat, and this is always confirmed if the temperature needle drops too low when driving at highway speeds. If you buy a new thermostat, try and get a genuine one rather than a pattern part.

If the fans are working then clean the connectors as Jezz suggests and then if no improvement i would change the thermostat.

Waterpump - two common types of failure - the bearing/seals go and leak coolant causing big problems on your engine as it is driven by the cambelt. Or the impeller blades wear down which is a big problem on some pumps with plastic/composite blades as they stop pumping water around the engine, the temp goes up and BANG!
Neither of these sound like your problem

Was the coolant changed/flushed when the turbo changed, good opportunity to do so and backflush the rad if/when you do the 'stat:)
