Hi All :D,

New to the forum and just picked up my 2005 9-3 1.9 Tid 120bhp.

I noticed that the temp gauge is only getting to a quarter (max) and down again when I turn the heating up inside the car.
I presume that that Stat needs changing and was wondering if there is a comprehensive How To Guide that will help me change it?

Thanks

Hi.

Common issue on high mileage cars, fairly straightforward job, according to the workshop manual it's a 45min job, fairly easy to get to in relation to some parts! Remove the intercooler pipe and battery housing if you need extra clearance and away you go! You'll need to flush the coolant out and refill also.

I've given mine to garage to do for £50.

Had a look at mine at the weekend, found it was a bit of a mess about battery and box out would have helped, could not see the bottom bolt only to find out the pipe work for the egr valve is over the top of it,with the aide of a mirror looks like a bolt with a thread off it a 10mm nut holds the egr pipe work to this, a deep socket would be needed i gave up,catch it later and clean out the egr system

Got it booked in for tomorrow morning for the Thermostat housing to be done.

On another sad note, I'm having starting problems as it takes quite a few cranks before it fires up and reading on this forum it could be much bigger than just glow plug issue.

I have found a Saab specialist not too far from me (Joe's) in Epsom, I may take a trip to him to see if he can diagnose!

Hi,

Get him to check the alternator, it's a 2 min job with the right kit. Might be worth charging battery fully or replacing with a higher starting power.

I don't think these cars have ever started on the first turn of the key it's always normally 2 or 3 cranks.

is there any smoke on startup ..... ??? alternator is hardly at fault as it DOESNT have any impact on starting the battery or starter does....

first thing is to check glowplugs and if there is any smoke or mis firing for a few seconds on start up

There's actually a new alternator and battery on the car by the looks of it.
When it was tested the battery was only getting 13.6v, but he said that its ok as its a new battery the voltage regulator will only send what the battery needs!

Is that correct?

On the starting note if I let the plugs warm up once, then turn the key off and then warm up again it starts first time!!
