So I have been reading through all the information I can find about the speaker systems installed in '06 Saab 9-3's. A great link is here - Saab 9-3 Audio, Navigation and Telematics (2003-2006) (saabworld.net) which is very technical and includes diagrams, parts, various configurations.

However, I can't find what I believe are my specs ??? Quick description
  • dashboard has five speakers - confirmed by shining lights through the grills (tweeters obvious)
  • doors each have a speaker
  • back seat seems to have a single speaker on each side (no tweeters)
Total = 9?

There is no amp in the trunk/boot compartment. So from the diagrams and descriptions shown in the link above for convertibles it would appear that I have some hybrid between the Premium 150 system and Premium 300 systems. I do have 6 CD player as part of standard kit as well as wheel volume controls and button for phone. But no phone/navigation, no CD/DVD in the boot = it's fully empty.

The reason this all began is that I'm not getting very much sound out of the two rear speakers, or even the door speakers for that matter. It's very much front loaded. As I adjust the fade from front to back, the volume drops by 80% or so full front vs full rear.

Does anyone have a similar set-up? And this is non-modified, north american purchase, used from dealer at 28k miles.

UPDATE = I pulled all the speaker covers off the dashboard and confirmed five = 2x 3 1/2", 2x tweeters and center plus pulled the covers off the rear trims = 2 only, no tweeters. I did not attempt to pull the door speaker covers as they are integrated but there wasn't any doubt about them.

The rear speakers are known to be terrible. Replace them.

thanks for the feedback - Yes, certainly can replace them - your link is one of several good videos on the topic.

However, questions remains as to what is my system? 9-speaker isn't a designated one.
1) I assume that the HUD feeds the rear speakers as in standard configuration (but what is that output?)
2) and that there is a amp under back seat / in panel that feeds the door speakers

But would be nice to get clarity / tech specs

For example, if i adjust the fade all the way to the back, the volume there is quite low = almost like the impedance of the speakers is too high from the unit driving it.
In which case, wouldn't it be better to replace with lower impedance speakers? That might balance out the sound better from front to rear at same volume setting.
But without some technical spec, I'm just shooting in the dark a bit. Like to figure it out, order my parts before ripping the back seat and panels out.
