Hi all,

The steering wheel on my 9000XS (J) goes in & out (not up & down).

When I brake hard the wheel slides in. ie the lock on the coloumn aint that good.

How do I improve the lock?

TIA

You need to remove the surround round the base of the steering column/ignition key.

Then if you look up at the steering column you will see the locking arm and its nut - all the locking arm does is compress a joint. Then you tighten the nut up....

Sounds easy but its not that easy to get the spanner onto the nut but it only takes a couple of tweaks to get it firm again.

Yes, had to do mine too. Took about 30 minutes but most of that was because I overtightened it to start with and (as Steve says) the nut is a pain to get to.

When removing the shroud I think you need to turn the wheel half a turn left then right to get at a couple of screws behind it. (plus the screws in the bottom) Be careful, the top clips are a bit fragile. Not a big deal if you break them though.
