I had a massive problem with my 2002MY 9-5 Aero HOT. I was driving this evening and suddenly the engine cut out and the engine failure light came on.

I managed to get the car going again but only by keeping the revs above around 1200rpm. Anytime the revs went below that, the engine would cut out (eg when slowing down at traffic lights etc). The only way to restart the car was to switch the engine on again whilst simultaneously really pumping the gas to get the revs up.

I managed to get the car home and Im going on hols tomorrow so Im hoping for some help. Any ideas what the problem could be? By the time I got home I was finding that the engine was really losing power - I was having to give it 3500 revs in first to really get the car moving

could be one of many things..............e.g sensors maf - o2 etc...........when reved did you feel turbo kick in ?

cheapest option and will pay for itself first time you use it.............get a obd code reader read codes/ pending codes and post back..............and you can always keep in car for those unexpected moments

search ebay for d900 2012 £20ish delivered i have had pleasure of using one and compared to my more expensive one cant fault and has added function of reading live data and does what it says on tin so to speak. make sure you order from uk supplier then you get it in 1-2 days

Hello mate thanks for the tip. I called the AA out and they sent a local mechanic who had a code reader very similar to the one you described. He had 2 error codes - MAF and the positive crankshaft sensor. Any idea how much these might cost to fix?

Crankshaft Position Sensor?

Maf is unlikely to cause the problem you had, the CPS is a more likely candidate. MAF is really all about the air/fuel ratio and getting it right, the car will still run with it disconnected but it will affect the mixture, could easily run leanand burn out a valve/piston.

The CPS could well cause the problems you describe.

look here - http://www.saabscene.com/forum/threads/132213-CPS-Sensor-replacement

given the fault it might be worth finding the sensor and following thw wires back to see if there is a short or corroded connector beofre replacing it - just a thought...

hi mike.....if the cps came up with a fault code as zohan says take a look at first and not so expensive to replace so may be worth doing same time as checking wiring to it.

As for the second code regarding the maf you could give it a clean with electrical contact cleaner less than a fiver at halfords. the maf can give no end of problems from starting/idle problems to feeling like youve hit a speed limiter wont go above a certain speed. as for replacing that not so cheap so a clean normally does the trick..........just spray it and try not to prod at it lol

when was the last time you had car serviced ?

Chaps - thank you for the useful info. The car was serviced by Neo Bros in Jun/Jul last year. Since then I've done c 6,000 miles, the majority of which have been motorway runs (eg down to South of France, up to Newcastle, three trips to Yorkshire etc).

The problem that I've got is that I have zero mechanical knowledge AND I live in a posh part of London where the nearest garage charges something £100 an hour (+ VAT) for work. They gave me a quote today which I thought was a bit ludicrous:

Quote for Saab 9-5 Mass Airflow meter = £185.92 + VAT
Crankshaft motion sensor = £68.96 + VAT
Labour = £157.50 + VAT

Now, I don't suppose anyone out there is happy to do the work for me? I am happy to pay cash. I would take the car to a garage further away but I'm worried that I might have the same problem. I'd be pretty terrified if my car just stopped working on a motorway. Driving in inner London at 20mph is less worrying but still, my ideal would be to have the car fixed where it is (SW3). If anyone out there is willing to do the job, I would be happy to pay them or listen to advice etc. and of course will pay good cash.
