Since I was going to the local fastener place anyway, I bought some stainless bolts to replace the rusty ones holding down my DI.

However, alarm bells went off in the back of my mind as I was screwing them into a hot engine about stainless + aluminium alloys reacting.

Is this a problem in this case? I'm sure someone else here said they'd fitted stainless.

should be okay so long as you don't put your DI to bed with a rattle gun
stainless+ally+rattlegun = never coming undone ever ever ever
hmm or even stainless+stainless+rattle.. like they did on that 'build a car' thing on sky that i was cringing to watch

We use gunmetal nuts on stainless bolts these days. I agree that if you overtighten stainless bolts into any crystalline metal it will never come undone - well only when you have snapped the head off the bolt

apart from the longterm corrosion it can make, the instant problem is the rattlegun - because the vibration creates a weld as you tighten it, even before you get to the 'over' bit
thats why i cringed at the 'experts' on telly merrily firing up the compressor
