I am pondering about changing the suspension setup on my car to get a sligtly more compliant ride.

Just wondering if anyone is using Abbott springs with Saab Sachs shocks and if so, what they are like? The local Saab specialist reckoned that certainly on some Saabs, this gives a good ride/handling balance.

I was thinking that a stiffer spring would need more damping than a standard shock could provide, hence the need for a sports (eg Koni/Bilstein) damper.

I find the ride too harsh at present, though am removing poly front ARB bushes this week, so it will be interesting to see what difference this makes.

Jez,
Have you thought about contacting Reading-Saab, and trying to get a deal on the Hirsch shocks for the 9000, looks like they are still listed on the Hirsch site....might get a deal..??

It's possible these maybe a good comprimise between full-on sports shocks(Koni/Bilstein) and the somewhat softish standard Sachs ones....?

Interesting response from someone I know (Steve Butts - from the world of Lotus's) in relation to my desire to get a better ride. For reference, Nitron are a small specialist shock company that have a very good name:

"Nitron may build you a whole damper - that cost oodles, particularly if
they haven't done a Saab before.

They can also take a damper, measure its valving on a damper dyno and possibly take the damper to peices and change the valving to give a better
ride quality.

Best that you ask them - talk to Guy Evans - 01993 849449

They are far more likely to give you help than you approaching Koni."

The valving option is interesting. I will enquire to see how much it costs - doubt it will be cheap.

There wouldn't be, but they will do custom work. I am interested in the valving and will definately speak with them.

Anyone got Hirsh suspension on their 9000? Never come across anyone who has.

Let us know what results. I'd also like to do something about the handling/ride comfort (mine's standard now)

Hi JezF,
I am running Abbott springs with std Aero (93) Sach shocks, and am happy with the ride. Have been running them for about 6 years now. Have also poly bushes almost everywhere, and not really harsh, have std wheels for Aero. Have thought many a time of changing to other makes, but cost, and minor improvement for road driving stopped me. A friend had Koni's then changed to Bilstein as the Koni's were harsh. With 185k on my Sachs I was thinking of replacment but may consider Abbott's batch of nearly new...
