hello everybody,
I'm a new member and very glad to find
plenty of Saab users here!
Bought my 9000 in oct. 2002 with 217 000 kms
in aug 2003 the speedo suddenly stopped
while driving on the motorway at a 120 km/h speed.
Saab dealer examined the car and told me it was the plastic speedo drive ring inside the gearbox that was broken or unsealed.
after a glance on this forum, it looks like
this happens quite often !!
So I am wondering what is the best thing to do on my car :
repair it myself ?
change the complete gearbox for a used one ?
(I found one that fits on my model for 400 €
with 100 000 kms use)
If anybody experienced the same problem ...
Thanks for any information or advice on this subject !

Hi! and welcome to Saabscene

I don't know about the 9000 in detail, but if your gearbox and gearchange are good I think it would be safer to repair it.

You can never really be sure of how good another gearbox will be.

I'm sure a 9000 expert will be along soon...

Sébastien,

Yes it is quite common, but before you tear into the gearbox, have you/the dealers made fully sure it's not the external sender. That went on mine.

Failing that, then a 100,000km/60,000m gearbox may be the easy cheap option. your gerabox at 217,000km could well be nearing 'end of life...'

OR...

If your gearbox is feeling good, have it rebuilt (speedo drive, bearing, synchro's and maybe a hub of 2 etc) and you'll have a new gearbox.

Yes Scareo, I checked the sender (not by myself) but the Saab's garage chief told me the sender was OK.
So I think I'm going to change the gearbox for a used one with less milage, and if I feel I can do it (with help of a mechanic !) maybe try to repair mine to have a spare one !
Thank you for helping me with your opinion Scareo !

A saab dealer charged me £1200 to do this ....

the part costs £0.50 !!!!

Changing the gearbox is not too difficult

Abbott ,who do a lot of these, reckon to be able to take out a gearbox in 20 mins !!

The only thing to be carefull about is the spec on the gearbox
there is another recent thread on gearboxes which you should consult to make sure you get the right one...saab changed them a lot !!
