Can anyone give advice on what tool is needed to remove the facory fitted CD player from my dash.
I need to clean it inside but cannot make out what is needed for removal.

I copped out when I needed the same job doing with cassette player - so I went to my local ICE specialist and smiled a lot, bought a head cleaner to show willing and they took the player out while I waited at no charge or more importantly damage. But I wasn't watching when it was done unfortunately.

there are two small holes on the face of the unit, insert small scredrivers (or old bicycle spokes - anything that will fit in the hole) and push to release the catch and then pull the unit forward.

I didn't manage to release mine using the screwdriver trick so I resorted to removing the ashtray and then pushing the CD player from the back, it came out in a one without any problems. The same seems to work for removing the radio too. Both go back in without any problems and sit correctly once they click into place.

As a side note does anyone know of a suitable replacement for the bulbs inside the single slot CD player? One of them has gone on mine (unfortunately behind the display section making the time pretty much unreadable) and I'd like to fix it...

Ive just (ten minutes ago) been to maplins to buy some of these

Subminiature Green Bulbs

in green, as they look like they will fit behind the screen in my Clarion Head unit - I will know tonight when I fit them.

I had to remove the LCD screen from the circuit board to get the old ones out as they were stuck - This really wan't very difficult, but if that sort of thing is likely to put you off, it might be easier just to take it somewhere to have them changed (more expensive though).

Thanks for the link Chris. Disassembling electronics is a hobby of mine so it shouldn't be a problem. Let me know how the fitting goes.
