Recently whilst wandering around a local SAAB breakers I noticed a number of Saab Car Computers on a shelf (for very little money). At present my 1997 9000 2.3T only has the standard EDU trip computer. Does anyone know if it is possible to swap these units without too much difficulty ?

There are at least 2 types of computer. The earlier one has a button for an interior heater timer but the upper 3 buttons all changed their style possibly around 1992 (?). There is a spare 8 pin terminal block behind the standard unit, which also has an identical 8 pin block and these would both fit in either of the 2 ports in the early unit! The later computer appears to require 1 single block. If you buy s/hand make sure the halogen lamps work (expensive). I coudn`t tally the Haynes manual wiring to my 92 car so haven`t solved this yet - has anyonelse ?

Cheers chrisn. I revisited the breakers today and removed the computer from a 97 car myself. It looked promising so I took a chance.(I have now seen 3 different types).Luckily I can now confirm that on a 97 model its just a straight swap.
By the way our familly have owned 4 SAAB 9000 cars 1987,1993,1994 and 1997 and I have not tallied the Haynes manual wiring diagrams to any of them.

The Haynes wiring diagrams are about as good as a chocolate teapot. Even if you know a bit about electrics.
Try seeing a SAAB workshop manual and you'll see how good they should be!!! All colour codes are present for every circuit along with the position of components and every variation of circuit for year and country.

Andy, today I'm buying a 1989 9000i with a computer that doesn't work. If it's not too personal a question, how much did the breakers charge you for a computer out of one of their cars? I'd like to replace the computer on my car but buying the car has left me skint !!!!

Like Andy, I have now seen 3 types as well. I checked with my local SAAB breaker/specialist only last week and he wanted £50 for middle version - thought that was a bit steep so declined ?

Gremlynne,no problem,my local SAAB breaker charges £30.00 regardless of type/year.But like most breakers, prices seem to depend on the type of day that he is having!! Another option would be to remove it from the car strip the unit down and try and fix it.Look very carefully for loose wires and dry/cracked solder joints, after all you cannot break it anymore than it already is.

Thanks for your replies Chris and Andy, most helpful. This is my first Saab and I'm a complete novice at car repairs so look out for lots of dumb questions over the coming months as I try to get mine back to tip-top condition!
