I have a warning sign showing "steering lock malfunction" which allows me to continue journey without any fault with steering. If I go to start car and fault appears I cannot start engine, if I remove key 3/4 times I can hear solenoid clicking and sometimes it will start. If engine starts and message appears I cannot engage drive . This message first appeared 10 months ago only once, but has now started to come on every day.

Sounds similar to a problem I experienced. My issue (2010 2.0T Aero manual) was the ISM (ignition switch module). The Saab specialist who fixed it advised that it was a fairly common fault. I believe some owners have fettled the offending module, mine was replaced.

It's logical that a possible steering lock malfunction should prevent starting (I had the same) and, in your case, prevent the selection of Drive. Frustrating if you believe that it's spurious

Take a very hard look at your battery. How old is it? Same intermittent problem. Replaced battery. No more issues.

It's your ignition switch. Check out my YouTube video on how to fix it.
