Hello Everyone,

My 2007 Aero Convertable's rear view mirror is losing it's silvering around the edge, and whilst this doesn't effect the view rearwards clarity wise, it does look a bit tatty. Recently I had cause to visit a SAAB recycler for a battery cover and found Auto dimming mirrors of the same outward appearance and wondered if it would be possible to retro-fit one to my vehicle. The recycler was of the view that some cars were produced with the appropriate "wiring" in place. Is there a way of knowing for certain if this is the case for my vehicle? Has anyone done this retro-fit or able to give any advice on what to look for behind the windscreen header?

Many thanks,

Roy

Thank you lizzard-t and aerojon for your advice. Hopefully, when I remove the mirror I will find the wiring socket, and it would be typical SAAB to have made the wiring loom to be capable of all fitments as standard. Perhaps one of those "design standards" that GM couldn't get along with! In response to aerojon's comment - I was looking at a 9-3 saloon and convertable and they both appeared to be the same - I think both models were on 05 plates. Anyway, if this retro-fit is "on" as it were, I will follow your advice and get the re-cycler to check. Once again many thanks to you both for your interest and advice. [email protected]

I think somewhere on here are quite a few threads covering the exact same retrofit , , normally 3 wires out of the mirror plug , green , red , black , I think red and black are the 2 and green is for the auto dim side mirrors ( if fitted ) but colours have to be confirmed So there is a work around .

That's extremely interesting lizzard-t. It makes a lot of sense to have the side mirrors dim at the same time as the internal one. This would be a neat extra to have - there's nothing worse that having some twerp following at night with headlights on full beam! The door mirrors fitted on my aero are the standard electric non parking variety. Do the auto dim type have a visible sensor or other way to outwardly distinguish them from the standard? I'm wondering - was the self parking option combined with the auto-dim function on the 2003 to 2007 model years? Once again many thanks for your continued help and interest. [email protected]

Hello Roy , there's nothing outwardly different between non and auto dim side mirrors , as the sensor is built into the rear view mirror .
It was an option, normally combined with auto wipers , think they called it the convince pack .
had that fitted to my last 9-3 .
there are 3 versions
1) auto dim
2) auto dip
3) auto dip and dim
i think auto dip came with electric seats ( but I could be wrong)
you can ( I think and there is a thread on here that explains how to retrofit) auto dim mirrors
but they can be hard to come by , but that well known auction site is a good starter for looking .
neo brothers have them but are £[email protected] per side

if it's a typo in the main heading and the car is a 05 as the pic, then the dipping mirror relates to the nearside only and it doesn't auto dip,you press the button on the mirror controls..i thought auto dimming door mirrors were MY07-08 onwards..
