I have recntly purchased a 9-3 1.9tdi sport on a 2004, The cambelt and water pump where replaced as part of the deal but when i start the car in the morning it runs really lumpy, much like the car is ready to cut out but as soon as its got warm the fault seems to disapear.
It seems to run this way when ever it is started
Could someone shed some light as to if it could be a fault with the timing when the cambelt was changed or could it be something more sinister.

There is a little more smoke than normal. Do you think its linked to the cambelt been replaced as when i did the test drive before buying the car, the car ran normal and had no evidence of smoke when running. The car was cold when i did the test drive and ran smooth.

After coming back from towing holiday recently mine has started sounding like it's only running on 3 at start-up. No smoke though, and it has done this before, only to come good again later. No problems when warm, apart from no pull at low revs <2000. 2006 150 TiD

There could be a problem with the injector wiring. Apparently this is a known issue and seems to affect cyl 3 for some reason. Try a search as this has cropped up before. Not had this on my Tid though. I believe 'jiggling' the wires in turn to the injectors whilst idling when cold can identify this problem as the offending wire can suddenly make the circuit (wearing rubber gloves??).

Mine used to start up lumpily from cold and give a bit of smoke, unless the weatehr was cold when it was fine. It was found recently that injector 1 was over-fuelling, and once replaced that problem has gone away. The dealer showed me the Tech2 readout of fuelling rates for the 4 injectors, and it was quite clear injector 1 was different from the other 3 - the same readout is available via OP-COM and perhaps other scanners so someone nearby might be able to check that possibility out.

Of course, checking the EGR is always a good place to start!

Well i've had lumpy start up and blue smoke for about a year and a half.My car is approaching 150k.
But when its really cold it starts fine.
Anyway I just had an oil change last week and the lumpy start was gone for 3 days (my wife even said it to me).
But it came back again, so i am wondering if the oil im using is too thin and creeping into the cylinder when the car is idle and that is causing bad combustion on start up until the oil is burned off?? (the cause of blue smoke).
I have been using Mobil 1 0w40 since i bought the car.
So im gonna put GM specific MOTUL 5w30 at next change and see if it helps.

SO i'm wondering what oil are people with lumpy starts are using?
Or if someone knows about engines think thats possible?

Also gonna get a tech2 readout of the injector fueling rates as krjh has done.
