This was working OK, now I can hear the motor but water coming out from the bottom of the front wheel liner . Front screen and headlight washers work OK, I think something must have come adrift or broken, but where? How to I get to it?
Thanks in advance

Sounds like the classic t piece at the bottom of the washer bottle has come adrift. The hard part is getting to the ****** - you have to remove the undertray to see the hose and replace the t piece. When mine went i tried to do it myself but without the help of a ramp and and difficulty in putting the under tray back correctly left it to my local specialists. I would assume max of 1/2 hours labour and a few pence for the t piece.

You can pick the non-return in line valve (which is usally what goes wrong) from Halford for a couple of quid (or in bulk from Euro car parts for pennies).

As for replacing it... if you have slim hands and dont mind the odd scrape simply remove the headlight and indicator and you can reach in and pull the non-return valve off the pipe and then using one hand put the new one on (trust me).

This is assuming you have the model with the two pump tank which is hidden in the wing.

I recall taking off the offside front wheelarch liner on a previous car ('92 CD). Can't remember if the undertray had to come off or not. I prised the valve open and replaced the perished rubber membrane with a circle cut out of a thin rubber glove. Dead easy.

cheers,

Ben.

Thanks for your speedy responses chaps, guess what the weekend has got in store for me then?

I must admit last night I was right hacked off...imagine the scene darkness, torch, helper pressing the stalk button loads and loads, me looking at the back, then at the front of the car with the bonnet up with my feet underneath exactly where a steady stream of water was going all over my shoes from the wheel arch...plonker or what? Quite funny when I think back though.

Just done this 3 times!
1. hose had split and come off the non return valve - trimmed a piece and pushed it back on. Removed the wheelarch liner and the front undertray quarter panel first time.
2. 2 days later the hose split at the pump end - trimmed and replaced. Removed only the quarter panel.
3. Following day reservoir empty again due to hose split again. Stopped being a cheapskate and bought some new 3/16" hose from Halfords. To fit onto the non-return valve pull the hose up into the engine compartment and fit there and then pass back down otherwise you need to remove the wheelarch liner to get to it
