Anxious brother rang earlier today expressing great concern at misbehaviour of otherwise and until now reliable 9K CSE LPT '94 model with manual gearbox which has developed the following problem:
When reverse gear is engaged, the engine just revs but the car does not move , it is as if it is still in neutral
. It happened suddenly without any warning. Forward gears engage as normal and drives as such but NO REVERSE! Any comments on likely cause and possible cure would be appreciated.

Does it make any nasty graeting noises?

If so see pics of my gearbox rebuild for dead reverse.

But if all forward gears work, but reverse does not, then that gear can't be selected.

Either the cogs have no teeth to mesh, or the selector for has bent so that it does not engage the gear.

For what it's worth, there is a retro fit kit for the 2nd senario on NG900's as they use an essentially 9000 box, but force reverse to be selected before the key is removed, and people have forced the box with the engine off in reverse to remove the key, bending the selector and synchro.

Does he leave in in reverse when parked?
