On my 1996 9000, I would like to change my power steering fluid and would like assistance with 2 questions please;

1. What is the equivalent to Saab power steering fluid, if there is one?

2. Is the return hose to the reservoir the smaller one at the bottom?

On question 2, there is contradiction between Quasimotors and Haynes, on whether the return hose is the top or bottom hose. They both say it is the smaller one and I would just like to confirm this.

cheers

Ian, can't help you out on the fluid, although I believe a GM fluid is equivalent. On the return hose, I have this picture on my web site in the procedure for changing the steering rack bushes. My car is also a '96. That procedure also covers replacing the fluid. Hope this helps.

Yes, "decent" being the important bit. Neo Brothers would dump ATF in it. Then again, if they're Ian's closest indy, he's got big problems

Thanks for your responses and especially the picture, Bill.

The main Adelaide independent specialist uses Type F fluid and I am reluctant to go that way.

Since I started this thread I found out how to search the archives where someone advises, that the fluid is GM part no 1050017 to GM specification 9985010. GM are the biggest car dealers here and the majority of their products use Dextron III and only 2 dealers stock the other fluid. Might be for Calibras and the like, which are fairly rare here.

I have enquired with Mobil Technical in Adelaide and can confirm that it is Hydraulic Fluid PS 4634 as mentioned by John.

I wouldn't bother with this if I was going to buy a litre, but I would like to flush 4 litres through the system. You see I plan to have this Saab for a long time!

It is getting too hard, I think I am of to see Mr Saab for some of his oil!

cheers
