Reading over some of the posts on this BB, I've noticed some users mentioning the lack of available unleaded fuels with an octane rating higher than 95.

Being from the states, the highest octane you can find at the pumps here (in my area anyway) is 94, which is carried by Sunoco and the lowest is 87. There are a few performance oriented garages around here that will sell racing fuel with an octane rating of 112 and slightly higher but it's very expensive ($2.50 - $3.00) per gallon.

What is the highest octane rated unleaded fuel you can buy in the UK? Is leaded fuel still available at the pumps over there???

Normal unleaded is 95 ... super is 97 or 98 I think.

Leaded was withdrawn from "normal" sale over a year ago and replaced (after complaints) with LPR (Lead Replacement Petrol). There are a few number of garages still selling 98RON Leaded petrol

The UK uses RON (Research Octane Number) - the US and other places seem to use Motor Octane Numbers or Pump Octane Numbers..

"The RON is sometimes used by some fuel companies to trick the racer into thinking he or she is getting a better fuel. The R+M/2 Octane Number is the average of the Research and Motor Octane numbers and is displayed on the retail level gas pumps."

Wonderful resource the web!

2.50 - 3.00 US Dollars for racing Fuel !!. We were paying that for regular stuff back in the 1980's !! Over double now. Thanks for pointing that out !
Assuming you have seen recent thread "Optimax Claims",but if not, there is lots of additives information quoted"

So add Toluene to Super Unleaded & you'll have 100 Ron Fuel. This stuff is cheap to buy & much easier to friendlier than 100ll AVGAS. Now that stuff IS nasty.

In Australia the government is battling with petrol tax avoidance on a massive scale. The introduction of high fuel levies designed to reduce petrol use, pollution and greenhouse gas emissions earlier this year led to garages diluting petrol with zero-tax Toluene paint-stripper & pocketing the difference.

The New South Wales Government "named & shamed" six Sydney petrol stations it found selling petrol containing up to 57% Toluene.
