I have just bought my 2nd Saab a 96 Aero Manual and whilst coming home tonight noticed a strange noise - it sounds like a bicycle dynamo whinning noise which is coming from the front of the car. When slowing down from 30mph it gets quiter until i stop. It sounds as if it is speed dependent and not engine rpm dependent. Any ideas?

PS If I switch off the engine the noise stops and i tried jacking up each corner of the car to spin the wheels and nothing happens!!

Does it do it if you depress the clutch and coast?
Does it do it if you take it out of gear and coast?
Have you checked the oil level in the gear box?

Do yo get it when you are stationary with the engine running?

I had a whistling noise on my H reg which was speed related and sounded very similar to the noise you are describing. The wheels seemed fine but if you moved them slowly they kept sticking slightly and releasing - turned out to be the Diff bearing.

To answer both of your questions the car has covered 82000 miles with full Saab history. The noise is still there when you coast in neutral and goes when you switch off the engine but is not there at idle. I am having the car inspected by the lads at my local Saab specialist tommorrow. He suggested either power steering bearings, alternator bearings or even Diff bearings but thought it was unliklely with that mileage!

i will let you know the outcome
