Hi everyone,

I was hoping someone might be able to help with this fault find.

I have had my wonderful Saab for 3 years now, it is regularly serviced and is still, in my opinion a great car. It's a 9-3, 1.9 tid 2007.

I noticed this start two days ago, and it is now at the garage, so we had a look and replaced the following,
as they were either well worn, or we changed them just in case..:

AC Pump replaced,
Timing belt kit.
Water pump replaced.

3 weeks ago the alternator went, so that has been replaced with a new one also.

However, after replacing the AC PUMP, and the timing belt and water pump, we are still getting the same noise.
We feel that it may be the cam shaft wearing in the cam carrier? I really hope not!!

Does anyone have any suggestions, or had any experience of this occurring before?

Have you tried removing the auxillary belt to see if the noise goes away?

did you replace tensioners and pulley's

has the aux drive belt been changed

OMG, if the sound came when turbo come on, then we have same problem, is from turbo palette.

Thanks guys for the replies.

We ran the car without the aux belt on, and the noise still persists.

We have ran it without the crankshaft belts too, and still the noise is there.

We are now fairly certain that the noise is coming from behind the cam shaft pulley, inside the cam carrier body. The noise is defiantly not coming from turbo palette.

If it is what we think it is then, it is where the timing belt was very tight, and this pulled on the camshaft,stressing the aluminium casing on the cam carrier, right behind the cam shaft pulley.

To fix this I will need to replace the cam carrier with a second hand one..! So far I have seen a couple on eBay , for under £200.

Well,

After replacing the cam carrier body, and cams (Both came as a job lot, second hand for £185), and then bolt all the car back together, I am still getting the noise although no way as near as noticeable as last time....

Don't know what to check next.....

Hi All,

I thought I'd give you a final update to the sound in the video i linked above. After going to SAAB dealers, they told me it was the turbo that was knackered. They offered to replace it for me at a cost of £700. I told them in a polite way to go away and procreate.

So I went to a local Turbo Repair Specialist, and they looked at the car for 30 seconds and straight away told me what the noise was. It was leaking from the manifold off the turbo where it joins the engine block. The gasket was knackered, and as we found out when I took it apart, one of the eight bolts holding the manifold to the block had sheared off inside the engine block. So after much drilling and pulling we extracted the busted bolt, and replaced it with one I had lying around. We also replaced the gaskets around the manifold and the small turbo gaskets and water pipe gaskets to (While I had the engine apart...!)

I went round to a mates Steel Factory and I skimmed the manifold nice and flat again, as there was excessive corrosive and metal fatigue.

So we then bolted her all back together again, after much swearing mind you... (We also had a few spare nuts..) got her back Ship-Shape and Bristol Fashion.

Just lucky you did not go the £700 new turbo route ! . I wonder if they would of dropped the price once they had found out what you discovered ? . But still all sorted .

An old...but hopefullt helpful thread as this has just happened to me. Garage has also put me on standby for the new turbo as well....will try and have a look for this manifold leak before next week.

Is it easy to spot....where to look exactly?

The moral of the thread is indeed to check things out for yourself. I had my 09 1.9TiD serviced by a Saab specialist recently, came highly recommended(stated EGR /MAF cleaned as standard). The EGR was not cleaned and last week a few problems. It resulted in me replacing it with a new unit, the old one had no gaskets top or bottom. Cleaned the MAF as well and the difference is clearly noticeable.

I had not performed a job on an M/V for many years but lots of advice on here and U-t, how did we ever get on before!

2 weeks ago had EGR changed by garage (EML on ) got it back seemed OK , next morning EML back on ,,,,,,,,not impressed.
Took engine cover off , found EGR plug dangling like a dangling thing .
They had reconnect it but did not slid the yellow locking tab back in !
So I reconnect it properly, disconnected battery over night ,reconnected it , and all was well

at the front of engine you will see a silver pitted cover plate with the fixing well rusty difficultish removing, well underneath that cover you will find the manifold

Hope you not had a £700 quote for a new turbo fitted !!!
