Fairly recently I have become aware of a low pitched buzzing which gets louder as the car is driven further. On investigation it seems to be coming from the back of the engine, happens when in gear (auto box) and even when the ign on but engine not started. Barely noticeable when cold but louder than the engine up to 30mph when hot. Constant pitch - not changing with speed.

My initial guess is that it is the power steering pump - but should the pump be on all the time? - I thought that the whole point of electric power steering was that it only powers up when needed.

Any thoughts or advice gratefully received.

Thanks
Mike

if the noise is coming from the back of the engine there is a good chance that this is your idle valve, if you want to check the idle valve is situated in front of the inlet manifold.
its about 3" long and about 2" round, if you put your hand on it you will feel it vibrating but they can get very noisy when worn they also run all the time that the ignition is on
