Hi Jim,

In my experience you can hear ball joints clattering if you drive down a rough track. You can jack up the car and by prying a tyre lever under the wheel and holding a finger against the joint any play will be evident.

Wishbone rear bushes will give a click at throttle on / throttle off times, accompanied by a tendency to "turn in" on corners. With the wheel jacked up rock it in a front to back direction and waych for play at the rear wishbone bush.

Lower engine mounts can make a knock as you move from a halt . best see BillJ's website for details of diagnosing a dodgy one.

Last thing I can think of, the bolts for the front subframes sometimes come loose. Worth checking that they are tight.
