My 97 9000 CSE has developed a knocking sound. When the steering wheel is turned more than 25 degrees (Either way) and then returned to the straight position, I get a knock or clunk type sound.

Any Ideas what this is, how serious etc., etc...

hi aerofan,it could be a CV joint or a ball joint.get someone to wiggle the steering whilst the front is off the ground and hold the ball joints and feel for any play.turn the wheels one way and spin the wheels, and listen for a click or clunk from the CVs.
b o luck

I had the same kind of thing on my 9000cse, in the end it turned out to be the steering rack, there was no play in the rack it worked fine, felt fine, I think some had fitted a rebuilt one at some time before I got the car, luckily the garage managed to find me a second hand unit, as new one from saab is just under £500

Thanks for the replies, I have spoken to a recommended Saab Specialist in Sunderland near my workplace and he has suggested that it could be a problem with the bushes on the wishbone system. I have booked the car in for a needed service, so it's getting checked whilst in for the service. I will post back any further comments.
