Re: Ipswich RR/Dyno day

There are several big hotels in Ipswich and nearby. I'm maybe not the best source of info, as I live here and I never actually use the hotels myself However, a lot of my colleagues have used the following and there haven't been any big complaints.

The Courtyard is on the A14, not far from the A12 and Martlesham - http://www.stayaway.com/cgi/info_cp.cgi?re...p;hotel_id=6254. Good food, but you would need a taxi to make it into town.

The Novotel in the middle of town is OK, provided you get on with Novotel beds. Parking can be interesting, but it's very handy for pubs and restaurants - http://www.stayaway.com/cgi/info_cp.cgi?re...p;hotel_id=8152. Allow about half an hour to get out to Martlesham in the morning before 10am.

Also in the middle of town is the Great White Horse - http://www.pub-explorer.com/suffolk/pub/gr...orseipswich.htm I don't know anyone who has stayed here, so I'm not sure what it's like.

On the edge of town, near where the A12 from London meets the A14, is the Holiday Inn - http://www.stayaway.com/cgi/info_cp.cgi?re...p;hotel_id=6566 and nearby there is decent enough pub called the Beagle where, if I remember correctly, the Holiday Inn Express is - http://www.stayaway.com/cgi/info_cp.cgi?re...p;hotel_id=6317. You would need a taxi to get into Ipswich for beers, but it would be easy to get to Martlesham in the morning.

If you really want to push the boat out, The Belstead Brook (near the Holiday Inn but a pain to find), the Salthouse Harbour (http://www.stayaway.com/cgi/info_cp.cgi?re...p;hotel_id=8184) and the Seckford Hall (near Woodbridge) are all really nice.

What sort of beers do you want? There are several good (real ale) pubs that you might want to check out, several of which even encourage you to call for takeaways to be delivered.

Apart from the Beagle (out of town, but good enough if you're staying there) there are several pubs that are worth investigating, such as the Plough in the middle of town, near to the Novotel - http://www.ipswich-angle.com/eatndrink/pubs/plough.cgi. Further to the east Side, there is the Milestone http://www.ipswich-angle.com/eatndrink/pubs/milestone.cgi (serve food), the Fat Cat http://www.ipswich-angle.com/eatndrink/pubs/fatcat.cgi (takeaways), the Grinning Rat http://www.ipswich-angle.com/eatndrink/pubs/grinrat.cgi and the Dove http://www.ipswich-angle.com/eatndrink/pubs/dove.cgi (sometimes have a barbecue early evening)

Near to Martlesham, there is also the Douglas Bader http://www.ipswich-angle.com/eatndrink/pubs/douglasbader.cgi, but most locals would head for the Black Tiles and the Red Lion in Martlesham (sorry no links)

If you want shiny decor, lager and alcopops, I'm not the person to ask!

HTH
