At present it is without, I intend to fit a intercooler off a FPT....first phase of a DIY upgrade. Will it perform OK with the benefit of the intercooler? I presume it is just extending forced-air route by cooling it for return to the intake??

A bit late at night for this but yes, pretty much except the output pipe from your turbo will need to be changed to route to the input of the intercooler which is on the RHS of the car. You'll also need the pipe from the intercooler to throttle housing.

Intercoolers are good news

Yes!
The intercooler will cool the air, hence increasing air density = more oxigen!
The ECU will balance the amount of fuel injected in accordance with the increased air/oxigen intake, resulting in increased power = increased BHP!

Definately a good idea!

Unless max boost has already been increased to close on cut off level. In which case further boost increase due to intercooler mod could cause cut off to occur. Unlikely but a possibility.
