1998 Saab 900SE (NG900) 2.0 liter engine, automatic transmission.

When I turn the key from RUN to START, and then let go, it stays on START. The spring inside the ignition switch does not return it to RUN.

Firstly, what do I need to replace if the spring is bad? The tumbler? The ignition switch? Something else?

Regardless, I am in the process of trying to remove the ignition switch. I removed the console surrounding it.

Do I need to remove the plastic around the transmission shift lever?

Not sure for an Auto. But had to take everything out on my manual, due to a damaged and jammed lock barrel. You need to take out the entire centre console, and I had to take out the gear change shaft.
The ignition switch is low down and an expensive item.
