I was having a general clean/check of my aero at the weekend and found a plug disconnected down the back of my engine, upon further investigation it appears to be the one from my IAC valve.
This has two pipes in it and my engine runs/ticks over fine as it is, not plugged in.
I plugged it in and it caused my engine to run eratically, the revs not dropping of when I came up to a corner etc, it didn't affect the starting or tickover though.

Why is this?? should it be plugged in? If not, do we know why not?

It seems a bit odd to me that a component would be there and not plugged in!!

Because it hasnt been plugged in the ECU has learnt to cope without it. Now it is plugged in the ECU has to re-adapt to it being there. May well be that its stuck in a certain position and the previous owner has worked around the problem rather than fixed it.

I unplugged it again as I wasnt sure what was going on!

So if I plug it in and disconnect my battery will the ECU learn whats going on? I have a spare one in my garage that I know works so I may fit that first.
