How to tell if catalytic converter’s been stolen?

Hi all, please can anyone advise how to tell if my cat’s been nicked? I’ve been scouring the net to try and find a photograph of the underside of a Saab 900 S Aero, circa 1992, but no luck.

Car hasn’t been used for a few weeks, and suddenly sounds different. Very different. The usual distinctive start-up ‘gurrrowellll‘ is not right. It’s suddenly very noisy. Had a look underneath and I suspect the cat has gone – there seems to be an empty space near the exhaust, but I’m not actually sure where it lives or what it’s supposed to look like under there. Please can anyone help?

Thanks, Jet

Maybe post a photo of what you see under there? From your description, it does sound likely that the cat is gone, but let's see what we're talking about.

The cat is the very first component in the exhaust system. It is way up front between the exhaust manifold and the flex pipe to the first muffler. Very hard to get to. Sounds like your problem is the rear muffler. If it has never been replaced it is surely ready to be rusted thru.

"Car hasn’t been used for a few weeks, and suddenly sounds different". It doesn't seem likely with a sudden symptom. Surely that would be a gradual process to rust that badly, garnerlewis?

Thanks for suggestion @namtats . I think the exhaust is hanging down too. I thought the cat was at the back near the exhaust, but if it’s way up front, could the exhaust cause a lot of noise if not held on its bracket?

If the Cat has gone the engine warning light will come on. The cat is at the front of the car on the down pipe.

If its a faulty exhaust you are in luck.
