Has anyone investigated the cost of getting new headlinings made up. You can buy new fibreglass Range Rover ones for about £100, and if we can find out who makes them it might be worth getting a batch of SAAB ones done. We'd need to identify the differences between them (2,3,4 or 5 door) it might be that the bare panels are all the same just with different holes in them, apart from non-sunroof and sunroof varieties.

I suspect the most popular might be 3dr with sunroof (certainly will be in the Trollbooster household)

If there is sufficient feedback I might try and progress this - first step being to try and figure out who makes the Rangey ones.....

Does this idea have legs?

AFAIK there's no difference between the headlinings for the various models apart from the sunroof part. It's usually recommended to fix any tears/ breaks with fibreglass body repair kit - is your headlining in a pretty bad way?

Hi SteveN,

There are different part numbers for all the variants. This may well have something to do with positions of lights, grab handles etc.

If this is the case, it might be an idea to have them made up with no holes or apertures, the cut outs marked but not made.

If pushed, you could then fir a sunroof headlining to a non-sunroof car, the only difference being the reduction in headroom...

I need to know what demand would be before I look into it first.

Fortunately my only 900 is a convertible so finally no sagging headlining

I bought a roll of material to recover my old T8v headlining (from those nice Elkparts people) but never got round to it, still have the roll somewhere (beige).

Are there many people who need new headlinings or just need the old one recovering? Must say I never got round to it as I was a bit worred about making a mess so maybe people want a complete new headlining?

The material isn't cheap and in the worst cases the board can get damaged on the way out, which is why I was thinking about a complete pop in unit as per Range ROver.

I did mine myself a few years ago but now it really needs doing again.

The plan is to take out the headlining again, strip the fabric and clean the glue off the fibreglass. I'd then repair the fibreglass myself before sending it out to a fabric specialist to get new material on. Hopefully that will see it good for a few years yet.

Still, if there is enough interest in ordering a batch I'd be up for it (5 door sun roof to complicate matters).

TBH I started this thread six months ago and thought it had run out of legs. I'm hhappy to resurrect it and see if I can get some prices.

I'll see if I can pin this.

Did you get any further with this?I would be interested in a five door sunroof version. My imense pride at driving my 1987 8v off island and then on a 2000 mile plus, round Britain trip without a hitch, was silghtly spoiled by hoping no-one would notice my cackhanded attempts to to stick the headliner up with glue ,stiches and a fibre- glass rod braced between the roof grab handles!

I've got some quotes from a guy in the midlands. Need 10 people to put down £175 for one made from fibreglass. I think the three door ones will go into a five door. They fit above the pillar trims. Any traders interested in supporting this venture?

I am very much into he idea of replacing the headlining
I live in Somerset though but am sure we can get around that!

I would need someone to fit it though as I have no space to do this.

pls email me at jjm "at" lcplc.co.uk

all the best

JJM,You don't need much space as it goes in and out through the hatch - saloon is different though that has to go out through the door IIRC.If we get this to work, rip out the old one, remove the pillar trims, mirror, sun visors grab rails and rear panel trim (need to clarify if this is included in the price) disconnect the dome light and out she pops.

OK Let's start a list.Need 10 at least. We'll need to figure out a way of 'bonding' the cash to make this work, but let's get the names first. And then presumably a donor headling for the pattern.

Hi - this sounds interesting. My '93 T16S (3 door with sunroof) is just starting to look a big 'saggy' at the rear. So would be keen on any ideas to fix it up. Are you suggesting that the existing (knackered) cloth AND fibreglass are removed from the vehicle - Then replaced with ONLY a fibreglass finished unit??? or would the new fibreglass unit need to be re-covered with fabric ??? £175 sounds like a good figure to me. Be interested in hearing more. Thanks, Phil

I assume a saloon you have to take the screen out! My 900se 5dr is getting saggy and 1/6th lite trims are getting tatty

Wollies have the material to recover. Would think its cheaper than a 3rd party specialist kit

The following headlinings are all different

1. 3 door hatch
2 5 door hatch
3. 2 door sedan
4 4 door sedan

I have also encountered differences in sunroof aperture size, possibly from model year to model year and some have been difficult to find the holes for the grab handles and the sunvisors, when puttting in a replacement biscuit.

The rear 3/4's of 3 door models change in 1991 as do the 5 door hatch models, the seat belt mount is in a different position.

All the headlinings I have replaced have been on the original biscuit and most have worked OK , a few not needing any repairs at all

We could supply a new fibreglass biscuit but as TB suggests it does need quite a few to make the mould worth making

Steve
