Here's the story. '92 2.0l non-turbo CDiS. On an irregular basis when I turn the headlight switch on there is no dash illumination and no headlights. If I move the switch to sidelights dash illumination and side lights ok. If I pull the switch out as far as it will go without disconnecting it, whilst it is in the on position, and if I turn the whole switch assembly to the left on come the headlights and dash lights. If I gingerly push it back in the lights stay on but if I turn the switch to off then on again then no go. I have tried a replacement, albeit secondhand switch, same thing happens. Anyone any thoughts please.
Cheers.

Sounds like a poor/broken connection in the multi-wire plug connection which slides onto the rear of the light switch. If I remember correctly, they are soldered connections. Try re-melting the solder to fix any cracked joints first.
