Can anyone give me an idea of how much to pay for parts & labour for a new head gasket for my Saab 9000 CSE 2.3 Turbo from a)Saab dealer and b)private garage/mechanic.

I have been quoted 7.5 hours work and a price of £75 per hour - seems a bit steep from a Saab dealer.

Thanks - Craig

Headgasket costs are largely labour so you will save a fortune going to an independent specialist. The labour cost will be about £35 per hour instead of £75 in your part of the world.

I've used Carlssons in Leatherhead when I lived near there and wouldn't hesitate to recommend them again.

I have just looked through the records on my old Carlsson, to replace the head gasket and head skimmed £245.00, that was last year,I am having the Head done on my Aero in the next couple of weeks, I have done a trade with the garage so it should be a freebie, One of the techs repairs cars at the weekend has told me he replaces head gaskets including skimming on 2.3lts for £170 cash
(up here in the dark north to get a head skimmed costs around £25/£30)

How is yours running is it over heating at all? [/qb][/b]
Hi Trebor - my car was not overheating at all, but was losing coolant suddenly - needing topping up every few days. This occurred suddenly - I have had the car about 9 months with no trouble at all.

The whole story is as follows:
I originally needed a new Direct Ignition unit as my car would turn over but not start. I had the car recovered to my nearest Saab dealer to analyse the problem and put in a new DI Unit and NGK plugs (previous service used Champion plugs - not recommended). While they had the car I asked them to look at the coolant problem and they diagnosed the head gasket fault.

They are also doing an analysis of the cylinder head and perhaps do a skim if it needs it.

I feel the dealer is expensive but I did not have the time to find an independant - and I was not sure of the standards of independent garages. I am happy with the dealer in so far as their level of customer service is great and they seem very thorough.

I am due to collect the car either Friday 14th or Monday 17th and will let you know how it has gone.

Craig
