GM 1984 900 16v turbo ignition barrel spring doesn't work to spring back.

One starter motor later and the culprit was the ignition key setting not springing back to stop the starter motor engaging. Therefore wore it out!
I just could not see that extra noise, yet looked.
Anyway, this seems a not unfamiliar problem to others yet can not find someone to tell me the best way to resolve it, and what does it entail?
