Glove Box Dilemma...

2559 Views 3 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  santeria589
After slamming my glove box shut in a rare fit of rage yesterday, the damn thing wont open anymore - the handle spins round with gay abandon. It does lock now though, something it resolutely refused to do before.

Assistance most welcome chaps!

1: Put on gloves.

2: Insert ridiculously large screwdriver in one of the top corners.

3: Open the lid slightly.

4: Grab the corner and open fully. (This is where the gloves do their part. Helps from cutting fingers on sharp plastic edges)

5: Visit scrapyard and buy new lid.
Hey fablon John,

Did you ever get your 99's glovebox to open, or did you take a crowbar to it in the end?

The reason I ask is that mine has done exactly the same thing, and I didn't even provoke it I've tried doing clever things like trying to tease the catch down with wire, but without success. I managed to open one corner enough to liberate a packet of cigarettes from inside (amazing the strength a nicotine-craving gives you), but all other attempts to open the damn thing have been futile.

Help!
Chris
Chris,
after prising open one corner of the lid and using extreme prejudice against the catch it opened.

Bugger!

There is a less destructive method. Remove the handle (just pull hard), then prise off the outer washer and the barrel just turns and falls out. The usual malady is the tiny pin on the end of the lock barrel itself which turns the plastic guide down from the closed position.
Your only recourse is to buy a new lock mechanism as the pin wont be reattached no matter how hard you try!

I used a broken circlip to secure the lid afterward but that wasnt ideal obviously! Just lazy.

Bon chance!

John.
