general knowledge question

This is a general knowledge search...after being ripped off for 150quid to replace two brake pipes , I have decided that I need to buy a pipe flaring kit.

However, after reading a few items on the internet, it appears it is not as simple as I thought and a clear lack of standardisation out there…

Does anyone have any pearls of experience to share concerning what flares are needed where...I have read about single, double, bubble, metric double, 45deg double.....the list goes and, but what concerns me is they all say you must use the right one, but give no clues as to how you can identify such flares...

I have two cars, my trusty old 900 and a Renault biscuit tin. I would have thought both would use metric flares, but I am told this is not the case, it is the manufacturer of the calliper/master cylinder that is important....any clues for someone looking to learn?

I assume the ÂŁ150 was for supply and fit. If you are going to fit yourself I'd get the supply from local brake factors - one in Lancaster - EK Brakes. The made up some pipes for me for a couple of quid. Worth trying that company that makes up copper pipes (Automec or something like that). This way all the flaring etc is done - you just do the bending. OK sorry not really answered your question.

Most modern pipe flaring kits will allow you to create any of the pipe ends you're ever likely to need. Prices from ÂŁ25 up to ÂŁ100 to suit occassional use or professional.

There's no point in buying a piece of kit designed to last forever used daily if you're only going to use it once in a blue moon.

Then the only thing you need to get is a decent quality roll of brake pipe and spend some time practicing. Make sure you can produce a perfect flare before you actually need to.

And as for identifying the different flares , well just copy the one that came off, that's what I've always done.

thanks for the info guys, that was my plan to get a tool and try a few, but I am curious...

Does anyone know if there are any general rules of thumb, for example do girling use say metric and double flares and another manufacturer use another combination??

I am sure I need to get 3/16 pipe, but sort of fittings do I need to be buying for a good coverage for 'modern' (post 1990) cars.
