My (manual) gearbox has developed a loud whine over the last few thousand miles. My mechanic tells me that it needs a replacement unit.

Having just had a quick search through the archives I notice that pinion bearings can be a cause of such a whine and that this is more like £300 for repair rather than £800-1000 for a replacement box.

So how do I tell if it's pinion bearings or something more serious? The whine is constant although much louder on overrun, most noticable when the gearbox is right against the slack (if you know what I mean?).

It seems that if I get it repaired for pinion bearings and it turns out to be something more serious then I could be looking at a bigger bill than a replacement unit. What a decision!

Any recommended specialists in the Herts/Cambs area?

On the other hand, how long will the gearbox last if I don't get it fixed and how would terminal failure present itself?

Thanks,

Liam.

Liam,
Sounds like pinions to me,as to how long, thats anybody's guess,if that is the only problem with the box,ie: all gears engage and stay engaged cleanly, then I would go for a repair.
As for who to do it,ask around localy for recomendations as there are more cowboy gearbox "Experts" than you can shake a stick at.
