gearbox is whining when driving, free turning of wheels I hear ratling sound in the gearbox. No real problems with changing gears, sometimes 3'rd gear problematic. Garage wants to change complete gearbox including clutche group. Costs €2500!!! Can it be something else, less dramatic? Are costs realistic?

A UK main dealer would charge about that using new genuine parts and top whack labour costs but I don't know about The Netherlands. Is the Dutch domiciled readership about?

Had the same problems, and a metallic grinding noise on decelleration on top of that. Today everything is fixed. New bearings, springs and other little parts for the gearbox and a new clutch. I paid half the price you quoted. Not at a dealer, but a Saab specialist.

Further to this topic. Has anyone ever bought a s/hand box and done an overhaul on it themselves?. I know you'd have to pay for fitting, But!!!

Are you sure it's all down to the gearbox? I have a whine whilst driving, in or out of gear, particularly noticable at around 40mph. Haven't got to the bottom of it yet, but the gearbox has been apart 4 times in the last 18 months and all worn bits have been replaced...

9000 manual box 'whine' is often due to the pinion bearing wear - it's a common problem. Have you had this checked/replaced yet?

Never had the problem (especially now I have an auto!), but it can apparently run for a long time before failure occurs.

Hmm... dunno. Where does it live/what does it look like? Is it the sort of thing that you would normally expect to have replaced on a gearbox rebuild? The last rebuild I had was by a reputable firm (no names obviously!) who replaced a lot of parts (I know, they let me have the old ones back!!)

I rebuilt the gearbox on my carly in about May (do a search on here for gearbox and part. Lots of pics.

Took just under 3 leasurely days.

All parts should be listed on the invoice, especially if they are a 'reputable' garage. Failing that, give the garage a call as they should have there own records.

Don't have diagrams to hand, or know enough about pinion bearings to advise on location, etc.

Definately a common manual box problem on 9000's and any Saab proficient garage should know this.
