Engaged reverse this afternoon, let out the clutch and there was a loud thump! - and the engine stalled. Engine started fine with the clutch in, but gear lever was not working properly - it would move around a bit but not select another gear. It appears to be locked up completely as I couldn't select neutral even.

Any suggestions would be appreciated as to what the problem might be - selectors
perhaps?

Got the car home to Cardigan from Swansea
courtesy of AA relay - excellent service, they turned up with a truck within 20
minutes of my call.

Definately sounds like mechanical failure within the gear box. Common problem with older 9000 gearboxes was 'pinion gear failure, but this normally resulted in gearbox whine - not sudden terminal failure.

A second hand or recon replacement can often be as cheap as a repair of your own gearbox, but wait and see if anyone else has experienced a similar problem first, and talk to a Saab gearbox specialist before forking out.

Thanks for the comments Paul. I should mention that the car is a K reg CSE with only 85K on the clock and in otherwise excellent condition. It has a FSH and two previous lady owners. I will be very disappointed if it is a major gearbox failure so soon, as stories of 250K milers abound. It's one of the reasons I bought the car last October, as I do a fairly high mileage (500 miles per week).

Alyn,

Sounds to me like you've been unlucky. The box should last longer than that. 85k miles is no real distance covered. It does sound though like something fairly terminal has happened somewhere within.

If you can't move the gear lever with the engine not running & the clutch depressed the only thing I can suggest is that you don't force it & don't try to rock the car in gear as this might cause further damage.

Needs further proper & full investigation.

Alyn,
Only speculating at this stage, so fingers crossed.

Not much consolation, but my first Saab (9000 CDE) which I bought 5 years ago for similar reasons to you, broke down within 2 weeks of purchase, which was on my first day of holiday in North Wales! Clutch master cylinder failed. As it transpired, the clutch pedal started to loose pressure the week prior - One day before total failure occured the garage I bought it from checked it and assured me that it would last for the duration of my holiday! Then, 1 year later the cylinder head cracked (very rare fault)!

Still running Saabs with no regrets, so hopefully things will look up for you too.

All the best at any rate.
