Occasionally I get a strong fuel smell when driving. I only notice it with the windows open, usually after a hard acceleration…but not always. There are no obvious leaks and fuel filter is new any ideas?

1986 Saab 9000 Turbo with 325,000km

Only had it for 6 months. Quite happy with its performance, considering its age and mileage. Small problems keep coming up, as one would expect. I deal with them as they occur.

I just can't find where the fuel smell is coming from...

The seal around the top of the fuel pump is leaking, petrol collects in the recess and the fumes get dragged thru the windows or sunroof when open....its worse if you drive fast as petrol slops about in the tank and also when full.

That definiltey sounds like it could be it cause I replaced my fuel pump a short while ago and lost the washers and had to get some other ones for it. Maybe I'll check that and see if it helps. Thanks!
